I will be perfectly honest: Vacancy (2007) was a little gem of a find for me. It is a lean, mean thriller with a remarkably simple premise—what if your crappy roadside motel was actually the set of a snuff film ring?
However, the true horror of this film might just be the first 20 minutes. The film stars Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale as a married couple on the verge of divorce, and I genuinely wanted to smack both of these characters over the head. They just will not stop bickering. The relentless arguing continues right up until they realize their lives are in danger—and honestly, it almost continues after that, too.
But the biggest nightmare here is just the sheer inconvenience of it all. Imagine being so incredibly exhausted, all you want to do is put your head on a pillow and sleep, and instead, you have to deal with an underground murder ring. If I were in their shoes, I think I’d just lay down on the incredibly unsanitary motel bed and say, "Yep, take me out. I'm too tired for this."
If you can survive the marital disputes of the first act, you are rewarded with a wildly satisfying climax. They finally let Kate Beckinsale loose, and the bad guys stood absolutely no chance. She wrecks their entire operation, executing a flawless 2-for-1 combo with a car—squashing one killer and crashing the other—before using the manager for target practice with a revolver. What a moment.
It’s an exhausting, suspenseful ride, but it absolutely delivers on its premise.
