Tomb Raider (2018) is a generic, joyless action movie that fundamentally misunderstands what makes Lara Croft an icon. By stripping away her confidence, her wealth, and her signature cool, the film replaces a legendary adventurer with a vulnerable origin story archetype that we’ve seen a thousand times before. While Alicia Vikander is a talented actress, she is given nothing to do but scream and get hurt. Angelina Jolie remains the gold standard because she actually embodied the "smartest and most capable" version of the character. This reboot is a swing and a miss in every category.
