Long before smartphones made road trip navigation a breeze, there was the CB radio—and the terrifying realization that the person on the other end might just be a homicidal maniac. Joy Ride (2001) stands as a quintessential 2000s thriller, delivering a lean, mean, 97-minute shot of adrenaline that rarely touches the brakes.
The film stars Paul Walker—who had a staggering 2001, releasing this mere months after the original The Fast and the Furious—and Steve Zahn in an incredibly charismatic performance. Zahn continues to prove he is the undisputed king of elevating these types of genre films; he is an absolute magnet on screen as the chaotic, dirtbag older brother.
The synopsis is delightfully simple: two brothers cross paths with a lonely, psychopathic trucker named Rusty Nail after a prank goes horrifically wrong. What follows is a masterclass in escalating tension. While the dialogue features some early-2000s colloquialisms that might make a modern audience wince, that unpredictable, wild-west scriptwriting is exactly what gives the film its gritty, time-capsule charm. You truly never know what is going to come out of a character's mouth.
With a solid plot, relentless pacing, and memorable story beats—including a tragic, brutal end for an innocent ice truck driver who was just trying to do the right thing—Joy Ride remains a highly recommended, high-octane throwback.
