If we are ranking every single movie in this supernatural franchise, I can confidently say that Insidious: Chapter 3 belongs at the absolute bottom of the pile.As a horror film existing in this established universe, it is by far the worst of the lot. However, I will give credit where credit is due: the one major saving grace of this movie is getting to watch the psychic Elise Rainier, played by the legendary Lin Shaye, be an absolute badass. Watching a sweet older woman physically kick ghost ass in the spirit realm is genuinely entertaining. But as far as highlights go, that is pretty much it.

There really is not much else that this movie did for me. It had a couple of cool camera tricks in certain spots, but the biggest issue was the audio. The screeching music actually worked entirely against the film. Whenever a scare was building up, the heavy-handed score gave away exactly what was going to happen before it even happened on screen.

There was absolutely zero subtlety to it, making the horror feel incredibly predictable.Which is actually really weird to say, because the director of this movie is Leigh Whannell. Whannell is a very talented filmmaker who actually directed two movies that I like a lot: The Invisible Man, and a sci-fi action film called Upgrade, which I still firmly believe is massively underrated.

Knowing what Whannell is capable of now, I guess we can just chalk this specific movie up to a necessary learning experience for him. This was his first time ever sitting in the director's chair for a feature film. He had to get a mediocre, predictable horror prequel out of his system so it could lead to much better things down the road.

This is the weakest entry in the franchise, and I absolutely do not recommend it.
