What in the Sean Bean was this movie?
Let’s establish some ground rules immediately: if you are looking for a deep, philosophical dive into the political symbolism, racism, or ethical complexities this film was supposedly trying to portray, you are on the wrong website. Feel free to find another review. We are here to talk about the fact that Cleanskin (2012) is unadulterated, hot garbage.
The plot follows a secret service agent tracking down a terrorist cell in London. What actually happens on screen is an endless parade of characters aggressively failing to communicate while being violently killed. The peak of this cinematic incompetence happens when an undercover agent gets doused in gasoline. Instead of shouting, "I'm an agent! We are on the same side!" to save his own life, he vaguely screams, "I'm like you!" My guy, you are about to be a burnt hotdog in three seconds. Articulate your job title!
Of course, the grand finale hinges on the most exhausted trope in the thriller playbook: the government is actually the real villain. They orchestrated the entire tragedy for money and power, perfectly happy to turn innocent civilians into human confetti along the way.
To make matters worse, the movie waits until the absolute bitter end to explain what a "cleanskin" even is (an operative with no prior criminal record). Frankly, they should have picked a better code name. "Cleanskin" sounds less like a gritty espionage term and way more like a mutant from Fallout 3 insulting a human.
This movie was an exhausting waste of time. Do yourself a favor and skip it entirely.
