A true story about Frank Abagnale Jr. who, before his 19th birthday, successfully conned millions of dollars worth of checks as a Pan Am pilot, doctor, and legal prosecutor. An FBI agent makes it his mission to put him behind bars. But Frank not only eludes capture, he revels in the pursuit.
Suggestion week. Day two. This one comes from my best friend โ who has been telling me to watch Catch Me If You Can for what feels like an unreasonable number of years.
Here is my honest position. When a film gets talked up by everyone around you for long enough, you stop being excited and start being nervous. What if I don't like it? Is that because it's overhyped? Or am I just surrounded by people who have been collectively brainwashed since 2002?
The answer โ it's good. Genuinely good. Leonardo DiCaprio is excellent, Tom Hanks does exactly what Tom Hanks does, and Christopher Walken walks into every scene and immediately elevates it simply by being Christopher Walken. There is something genuinely special about watching him work.
My issue is the runtime. Two hours and change is a commitment, and there are stretches in here where a firmer hand in the edit suite would have served the film considerably better. The story works. The performances work. It just outstays its welcome in places it can't afford to.
Worth watching. My best friend was right.
I will not be making a habit of admitting that.
