When assembling the Mount Rushmore of 2000s animated classics, titles like Surf’s Up, Madagascar, and Happy Feet usually dominate the conversation. But after finally experiencing it for the very first time, I am officially submitting Barnyard (2006) for consideration.

At first glance, this film is a bizarre fever dream. The creator, Steve Oedekerk, made the wildly unhinged decision to give the male cows—including our protagonist, Otis (voiced by Kevin James)—fully developed, giant pink udders. It is biologically terrifying. But if you can look past the questionable bovine anatomy, you will find a movie that is an absolute joy to watch.

The animation style itself feels like a lost art. The screen is constantly packed with secondary visual gags, meaning you can watch a deeply serious conversation in the foreground while a chaotic, hilarious slapstick routine is happening in the background. It rewards you for paying attention.

Despite the sheer absurdity of characters like Biggie Cheese, the film still manages to deliver a genuine emotional gut-punch. The tragic death of the patriarch, Ben (voiced perfectly by Sam Elliott), hits just as hard as any top-tier Pixar moment.

So why isn't this movie talked about more? A quick look at the 2006 release calendar explains everything. Barnyard had to compete in an absolute bloodbath of a year against Cars, Ice Age: The Meltdown, Happy Feet, Over the Hedge, and Monster House. It got buried. But do not sleep on it. It is unhinged, it is surprisingly heartfelt, and I thoroughly enjoyed my first trip to the farm.
