While O'Brien proved in The Maze Runner that he can carry a franchise, American Assassin forces him into a grim-dark mold that stifles his natural screen presence. He puts in the physical work, but the transition from his signature quick-witted energy to a "stoic, moody killing machine" feels artificial.
The film tries for a gritty, Bourne-esque atmosphere but lacks the direction to pull it off. Even a solid Michael Keaton can't save this from feeling like a collection of tired spy tropes. It’s a generic thriller that fails to capitalize on its star’s greatest strengths
