Afraid (2024) is another entry in the growing sub-genre of AI cautionary tales, focusing on the addiction and manipulation that comes with digital dependency. While it manages a few effective moments of tension, it fails to commit to the horror. There are two specific scenes where the movie feels like itβs about to get truly creepy, only to pull back and play it safe. When a 20-year-old movie like i, Robot still feels more unsettling, you know the modern version has missed the mark. Itβs a repetitive storyline that desperately needed a fresh angle.
